cool mac apps
I recently got a macbook.
It has taken me a bit of time to find comparable applications to those I am used to when on my Gnu/Linux boxen. Here is a list of apps I found, and their Gnu/Linux counterparts where applicable.
- AdiumX is a workable replacement for Gajim.
- Play is a similar media player to Exaile. Cog is kind of a cool player too, but I liked Play more.
- SSHKeychain is a gui version of ssh-add/pinentry-gtk.
- MAX is a gui utility that does what the cli utility abcde used to do for me.
- Transmission is a passable bittorrent work-alike to deluge. Transmission doesn't support some of the niceties that deluge does though. No protocol encryption, no blacklists, etc. It is pretty simple, but seems to get the job done.
- Quicksilver does a similar job to gmrun. Definitely more 'fancy'.
I found several apps that I was familiar with, able to be installed via macports. yay!
- irssi
- git scm
Some apps were just the same as their Gnu/Linux counterparts.
- vim (part of OS X)
- screen (part of OS X)
- openssh (part of OS X)
- Firefox
- VLC
- VMWare
There were some cool apps that I found myself using, that weren't things I had used before.
- Tunnelblick -- An openvpn gui.
- TextMate -- A popular programmer's editor.
- HandBrake -- A DVD ripper/encoder.
- Dashboard -- Neat little desktop type widgets.
- Growl -- A toast-like notification system.
Update: After a couple of months, I ended up going back to a Linux box.
More about that...
