Someone gave me a link to Upstart today. It sounds very intriguing. I like the idea of a small and event driven daemon that handles startup and system cron functionality.

Something else I ran across recently is nginx. It is being used by a few people as a http load balancer in front of some mongrel driven Rails apps. Supposedly it has better performance than Pound or Pen. Something to check out for sure.
